Itinerary
Day 1 – Cairo
Today you will be transferred to Alexandria by road, travelling along the legendary desert road that connects Cairo with the Mediterranean coast. Upon arrival, check into your historic heritage hotel overlooking the sparkling sea. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore Alexandria at your own pace or enjoy the amenities at your hotel.
Day 2 – Alexandria
In the company of an expert local guide, discover Alexandria’s historic sites, starting at the Roman Catacombs, Egypt’s largest Roman burial site. Buried over 35 metres below ground level, the catacombs were serendipitously discovered in 1900 after a donkey cart toppled into the access shaft of the catacomb. Afterwards, continue to Pompey’s Pillar, a 30-metre monolithic column, one of the largest ever built, and which during Roman times was topped with a statue. Then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the Qaitbay Fortress, built on the former site of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Day 3 – El Alamein – Cairo
After breakfast at your hotel, visit Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexandria Library), a landmark building commemorating the Great Library of Alexandria. Then, drive to nearby El Alamein to visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery, the resting place of more than 8,500 Commonwealth soldiers who died in Western Desert campaigns during World War II. Spend some time at this moving site, before returning to Cairo to join your escorted Egypt tour.
